June 6th, 2018|

Special post by Colleen Murphy, Second Harvest's Volunteer Engagement Coordinator Second Harvest held our first Family Sort on Saturday, May 19, and it’s safe to say the families had a great time.  Over the years we have had overwhelming requests from our donors and volunteers to have a food sort for families of all ages [...]

September is Hunger Action Month

August 31st, 2017|

September is Hunger Action Month – time for everyone in Silicon Valley to mobilize against local hunger. The local economy is booming, but many of our neighbors are having a hard time putting food on the table as the cost of housing skyrockets. Even those we depend on to make our community run can’t afford [...]

On the Front Lines: Fighting Senior Hunger

February 4th, 2017|

It was early on a chilly Tuesday morning when I visited Trinity Church of Sunnyvale. The sun wasn’t even up yet but there were people hard at work unpacking food that was just delivered from a Second Harvest Food Bank truck. This morning’s bounty included rice, bread, eggs, and lots of fresh produce including zucchini, carrots, celery, pears, apples and oranges. The volunteers set up tables and then organized the food so that heavier, sturdier items were first and the fragile, more easily crushed items were at the end of the line. […]

Inside the Food Bank: Prepping the Product for Volunteers

January 4th, 2017|

It’s 7:30 a.m. at our Cypress Center and our staff is already getting set up to host volunteers for the day. The Volunteer Services staff rarely gets down time with hundreds of volunteers coming through our buildings daily. While it keeps our staff busy, distributing nearly 1.2 million pounds of food per week to our neighbors in need would be impossible without help from volunteers. The day starts with an empty sort room and within two hours it is set up to host 50+ volunteers for the first shift. Since Cypress Center is our produce hub, the volunteer sorts have to be prepped just before the volunteers arrive since the fruits and vegetables […]

Day at the Donation Tent: A Snapshot of the Holiday Spirit

December 8th, 2016|

When you work at Second Harvest Food Bank, the season all staff members collectively know as “Holiday” is busy! The months of November and December are a flurry of food drives, events, dock donations, volunteers, and of course getting food out to families in need. Despite all the craziness, there is no better time to work at the Food Bank. The feelings of […]

Giving Time: Yolanda Gutiérrez

October 6th, 2016|

“Giving Time” focuses on the invaluable volunteers who donate more than 314,000 hours to Second Harvest each year, more than doubling the size of our staff. Special Blog Post featuring Yolanda Gutiérrez, as told to Matt Mastrangelo of Second Harvest Food Bank. I work for a company called QTS, and it has a community impact program where each employee is given 24 hours per year to volunteer within the community, with the charity of their choice. I chose to work with Second Harvest Food Bank because […]
