Nutrition Newbie: When Food is Medicine at the Food Bank

August 2nd, 2017|

“Nutrition Newbie” is a series focused on basic nutrition information and tips. Special Blog Post By: Alex Navarro, Nutrition Education Coordinator, San Mateo County Many of Second Harvest Food Bank’s clients suffer from diet-related conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. This dilemma often leads them to make the tough decision of either paying their monthly bills or buying healthy, nutritionally adequate foods for themselves and their families. To help address this issue, Second Harvest partnered with Samaritan House Clinics and opened up the first Food Pharmacy in California  – where diabetic patients from the clinic can fill their “prescription” for wholesome, nutritious food. Oil Donation for Health

May 31st, 2017|

One in 3 of our clients reports a member of their household has diabetes and more than half of our clients report a member of their household has high blood pressure.  Last year we launched our Healthy Food & Beverage Policy, which aims to educate our community about foods to eat in order to maximize the health benefits of items received from the Food Bank and minimize the need for cheap, high-calorie, low-nutrition meals. Kathy Jackson: On Leaving What You Love

April 24th, 2017|

Working at Second Harvest has been one the highlights of my life. It’s safe to say that the Food Bank looks a lot different than it did in 2009, and I could not be more proud of what we’ve accomplished together. During my tenure, we expanded to three facilities, adding a dedicated produce distribution center, [...]

Sacrificing it All for Her Daughter

February 22nd, 2017|

Nichelle had a series of good jobs and a nice car. Then she lost her job during the Great Recession in 2009. While unemployed Nichelle became pregnant and couldn’t afford to stay in her apartment. After the birth of her daughter Lilliana she spent many months living on the couches of friends and family. In 2013 her father, a retired veteran, was evicted from his home of 30 years. Nichelle and her father agreed to move in to a new place together in Millbrae, to ease the burden of rent. She now rents a room from her father, and shares the room with her 6-year-old daughter. […]
