“The proportion of people over 60 deemed to be “facing hunger” – based on their answers to a U.S. Census survey –  has been on a steady climb that began in 2001 and has plateaued but not dropped in recent years, according to a report released Wednesday.”

With hefty loans and full-time jobs, more college students are becoming food insecure.

“With all the recent hoopla about California’s record-low unemployment rate and the heady prospect of its becoming No. 5 in global economic rankings, it is easy to lose sight of another salient fact: It is the nation’s most poverty-stricken state.”

“There’s a growing segment of the American population that earns a decent salary but lives paycheck-to-paycheck: the income-rich and asset-poor.”

“Unexpected increases in energy prices (also called energy price shocks) can adversely affect food security; purchasing food and gasoline and paying utility bills compete for the same limited resources of low-income households. For poor families, rising energy prices create a difficult tradeoff between buying enough food, staying warm, or having enough gas for the car.”

We are partnering with school districts with hope we can reach more hungry kids this summer.

“The USDA pays for the summer meals, but nationwide, only about 3.5 million children eat them. That’s compared to 21 million kids who receive free and reduced-cost lunch during the school year, leaving a gap of more than 16 million kids throughout the nation who likely don’t have access to healthy food on a regular basis.”

“A whopping one third — 1.3 billion tons — of the food produced for human consumption worldwide is lost every year. Closer to home, Americans throw out about 40 percent of the food they produce annually, the equivalent of $165 billion. When one in six Americans lack food security, the amount of food discarded every year is even more startling. However, consumers are largely uneducated about how packaging can protect fresh foods…”

“In a first-of-its-kind study that looks into the issue of hunger on college campuses nationwide, 13 percent of households with students at community colleges and 11 percent with students at four-year colleges worried about having enough money to buy food in 2015.”

“Purchasing healthy foods online — which can sometimes be less expensive than purchasing them in the grocery store — with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, or food stamps, makes sense to me. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is testing out a SNAP online purchasing pilot program that will begin this summer.”
