Local Hunger Fighter: Monica Barrera-Ruelas, Eligibility Worker, Santa Clara County Social Services Agency
How are you helping Second Harvest and our community?
As an Eligibility Worker for the Social Services Agency, I work alongside Second Harvest helping those in need at St. Joseph’s Family Center in Gilroy. Our clients receive a much more personal experience, making the process much quicker. The application and interview are completed on the same day and in most cases benefits are approved in less than 3 days.
What inspires you to give?
I have always felt the need to give back since I was a young girl. As an eligibility worker, I am able to help people in need every day. It’s very rewarding to be able to put food on so many tables.
Why should people care about hunger in our community?
We should all do our part to help. Even small contributions can go a long way. Our country is very fortunate to have an abundance of resources and no one should ever go hungry or even have to decide whether to buy food or pay rent.
Why do you support Second Harvest?
Second Harvest is making a difference in our community. I am proud to work for Social Services alongside Second Harvest, because together we are making a difference.
